Archives for November, 2007

After touting an undefeated week two weeks ago, I went 2-4 last week. I am still proud of my overall record this season. This is the last week for the Big Ten, so next week I will have to find some other “under the radar” games to pick. Anyway here are my picks for the final week of Big Ten play where there are plenty of trophies to be won.

Western Michigan at Iowa - The Hawkeyes had a closer than expected win against Minnesota last week. This team really baffles me, one week they look like they have everything figured out. Then the next they take 3 steps backwards. Good thing for Iowa is that they are playing a Bronco team that is not very good. They have three wins and the best one is against Toledo. Western Michigan will have a tough time scoring against Iowa’s defense, and WMU is very turnover prone. Iowa will be able to muster up enough points to wins this one, but it could be closer than many Hawkeye fans would like. Iowa 24-13

Purdue at Indiana - Both the Boilermakers and the Hoosiers are coming off losses; Purdue lost to Michigan State and Indiana lost to Northwestern. Actually looking at their schedules, Indiana has lost 4 of their last 5 games, and Purdue has lost 4 of their last 6. There will be a lot of offensive fireworks in this game. Two of the top receivers in the Big Ten will be facing off, James Hardy for IU and Dorien Bryant for Purdue. I really like the feel good story that Indiana has become this season, but I believe that Purdue is a better overall team. The Boilermakers have scored more points, and given up less than a Hoosiers, and remember that Indiana did not play Michigan or Ohio State like Purdue did. Both teams will get into the 30’s, but in the end Purdue will take home the Old Oaken Bucket. Purdue 38-35

Northwestern at Illinois - This would be a perfect week for a let down for the Illini as they are coming off a huge upset of Ohio State. The Wildcats beat Indiana last week to become bowl eligible, but would like another win this week since up to 10 of the 11 teams in the Big Ten could be bowl eligible. Offensively, these teams are polar opposites. The Wildcats have a strong passing game while the Illini rely on a rushing attack by Rashard Mendenhall and their quarterback Juice Williams. Williams came under fire in the middle of the season for his lackluster passing skills, but he put it all together last week against Ohio State. I do not see Zook allowing his team to have a let down. This is an important game for the Illni also because with a win they could be heading to a New Year’s Day bowl. Possibly against Zook’s former team Florida. Illinois is clicking and there is nothing the Wildcats can do to stop them. Illinois takes home the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk. Illinois 30-14

Wisconsin at Minnesota - The winner of this game will get to take home Paul Bunyon’s Axe. Buried under the huge upset of Ohio State was Wisconsin’s win at home against Michigan. Since their mid-season loss at Penn State, the Badgers have been a totally different team. Minnesota on the other hand has lost 9 in a row and is looking not to go winless in the Big Ten this year. The Gophers are last in the Big Ten in total defense and scoring defense. With or without PJ Hill, the Badgers should be able to take home the Axe for the fourth straight year. They have been playing well defensively and if they keep QB Adam Weber under control, the Badgers will cruise to victory. Wisconsin 41-17

Penn State at Michigan State - In only their 14th year in the Big Ten, Penn State plays Michigan State for the Land Grant Trophy. The Nittany Lions have won the last three meetings between the two schools. This year they enter the game amidst some more team problems. Chris Baker and Navarro Bowman will not be making the trip to East Lansing after being formally charged for their part in a fight at the HUB the night after the Iowa game. Baker’s loss will hurt because the Nittany Lions are already thin on the defensive lines because of injuries. Unfortunately for them they are playing a Michigan State team that loves to pound the ball down their opponent’s throats. They average over 200 yards per game on the ground, and it doesn’t help that Penn State’s defense has gotten worse as the season has progressed.. Ringer and Caulcrick will have big days against the Lions. For the Lions to win Morelli has to have a perfect day and the Lions must attack the Spartans, but for those who know Paterno he does anything but attack when playing on the road. Sparty gets a much needed seventh win. Michigan State 28-20

Ohio State at Michigan - When the Buckeyes and the Wolverines play, they don’t have a specific trophy which is awarded to the winner. More often or not they play for the biggest trophy in the Big Ten, the Big Ten Championship Trophy. Both teams are coming off heartbreaking losses, but that does not diminish the desire to win this game. It has been widely reported that this will be Lloyd Carr’s last regular season game, and the team and the home crowd would love to see him go out a winner. But Carr has had a hard time beating Tressel, going 1-5 against his foe from the South. I was all set to pick Michigan in this game, but what holds me back are the injuries to both Henne and Hart. Even if I knew Henne was not going to play but Hart was 100%, I would have picked the Wolverines, but we all know that isn’t true. This will be a great game, with a lot of passion on both sides of the ball. I think Ohio State’s defense is too tough for the banged up Wolverines’ offense and Ohio State will find ways to score on Michigan’s defense. I am sure Tressel watched tapes of all of Michigan’s losses and has the guts to game plan for them. Henne and Hart will both leave Michigan without ever beating the Buckeyes and Ohio State will book tickets to the Rose Bowl. Ohio State 27-10

Last Week: 2-4 (.333) Overall: 63-19 (.768)

No one got all the votes from the Pick ‘Em crew, but there were a few others that were not far behind.

Hawaii (93%) at Nevada (7%)

-Hawaii - I know Nevada is supposed to be the real test for Hawaii this year, but that so-called gimmick offense on the island is hard to stop. –Cyril Tircuit, Average Joe

- No Colt Brennan=No Win. Nevada gave Boise State all they could handle. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

- Hawaii. It’s the system, not the quarterback. –Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- Nevada has a top notch offense. Unfortunately for them, their defense sucks. With or without a cognizant Brennan, I think Hawaii wins this one. – Adam Nettina, Pitch Right

- Wait, Nevada plays football? Rainbows by 31. –Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

Penn State (77%) at Michigan State (23%)

-Should be a close one, but I see the Nittany Lions pulling this one out. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

- Wait, Michigan State plays football? Depends Pants by 12. – Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

- I’m still wondering what Penn State has shown anyone this year. Should be a close game, but you’ve got to go with the home team. –Adam Nettina, Pitch Right

- Penn State. It’s a time-honored tradition for Sparty to collapse at the end of the season. – Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- Penn State lost another defensive lineman, that doesn’t help when you are playing a team that runs the ball as good as Sparty does. MSU will control the clock and the game to beat the Lions. – Brian Sakowski, In The Bleachers

Oklahoma (92%) at Texas Tech (8%)

- Oklahoma. If Texas can put up 59 against the Red Raiders, Oklahoma can break the century mark. – Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- Will be a close one as well, but the Sooners score late to win. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

- Wait, Texas Tech football hasn’t been substituting in their basketball team’s points? Oklahoma by 15. – Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

- With the Oregon loss this game became even bigger for the Sooners. They’ll hold down Harrell to clinch the Big 12 South. – Brian Sakowski, In The Bleachers

- Will be a close one as well, but the Sooners score late to win. -Greg Gowins, Average Joe

West Virginia (92%) at Cincinnati (8%)

- West Virginia WV offense plays four quarters but only needs one. – John Radcliff, Bastard Sons of Pinfall Marks

- Cincinnati. This should be a great game, matching the two best run defenses in the conference. When forced to put it up, the Bearcats are a little better. – Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- Wait, Cincinatti is the media favorite in football? Pittsnoggles by 23. –Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

- I am still waiting for that breakout game for both White and Slaton. I feel that this is the week for it. – Brian Sakowski, In The Bleachers.

- Will the Bearcats still be thinking about last week’s big win? I think so. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

Boston College (8%) at Clemson (92%)

- Clemson. I’m going with the ACC’s best passing attack, not the best pro quarterback prospect. – Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- Clemson. The best quarterback in the ACC gets his recognition. –John Radcliff, Bastard Sons of Pinfall Marks

- Ryan is a stud, but doesn’t have a whole lot of help around him. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

- Usually I’m inclined to go with the team which needs the game more, but after what Clemson did to Wake last week I wouldn’t dare pick against them at home. – Adam Nettina, Pitch Right

- I have no way to tie this into any questions… except maybe, did you know Cullen Harpers’ numbers are better than Matt Ryan’s? No wait, that was a serious question. Tommy Bowden’s daughter by 15. {insert obligatory picture of his daughter here… perhaps the nude one} - Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

- Ryan’s day in the sun has past, now it is Harper’s turn. Davis and Spiller will help the Tigers lead a balanced attack and get a victory to clinch the ACC Atlantic. – Brian Sakowski, In The Bleachers

Kentucky (8%) at Georgia (92%)

- I picked Kentucky at first, but then I realized I’ve been wrong on almost all of my SEC picks this year. I guess I’ll go with the Dawgs. – Adam Nettina, Pitch Right

- Wait, Kentucky could beat Georgia in football? Ahhh… that fits the theme better. UGA’s by 8. – Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

- Richt has the Dawgs firing on all cylinders. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

- Georgia. Another great game with a lot at stake, but these teams are headed in different directions. – Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- Georgia is one of the hottest teams in the country right now. Moroeno and Stafford are going to a tough duo for years to come. Kentucky doesn’t have the defense to contain them. – Brian Sakowski, In The Bleachers.

Ohio State (62%) at Michigan (38%)

- Ohio State. Sorry, Lloyd. Your defense has let you down, and your stars on offense are injured. – Jim Gindin, Football Frontier

- I honestly do not know. Can they win Lloyd Carr’s last game? Can Ohio State leap back into the National Collegiate Athletic Association Bowl Subdivision Bowl Championship Series Championship Game debate? Super Sweaters by a deuce. – Chris Mason, In The Bleachers

- Michigan. I just want Michigan to win. – John Radcliff, Bastard Sons of Pinfall Marks

- Michigan - The Buckeyes are going to taste a losing streak for the first time in a long while. – Cyril Tircuit, Average Joe

- There are too many question marks surrounding the health of Hart and Henne for me to pick Michigan. I know they want to send Carr out a winner, but they’ll have to do it in the bowl game. – Brian Sakowski, In The Bleachers.

- The Wolverines want to send their coach out on a high note. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe

Here are the answers to some questions that you are afraid to ask at the watercooler because your co-workers will think you are too geeky….

College Football

Q. Why is Kansas undefeated?

A. It’s normal for basketball powerhouses such as Kansas to fill their early season schedule with such lightweight teams such as Gardner-Webb and Grand Valley State….oh, you mean the football team is undefeated? [laughs]

Seriously, no one will compare the Big 12 North with Murders Row. Kansas has played very good football in a weak division. While having a great year, lets see them win the Big 12 Championship before giving them massive hype. They did beat Texas A&M, but Missouri, then Oklahoma finish the season. With a guaranteed four wild cards in the BCS this year, beating Mizzou will get them a berth.

Q. Are you upset that Lloyd Carr is…erm…retiring?

A. Hell no. In case you missed yesterday’s rumor of Carr announcing his retirement after Saturday’s game against THE Ohio State University, I say “Please do not let the door hit you on the way out.”

This Michigan is tired of teams that are unprepared and flat when it matters most like App State and certain Rose Bowls, and that choke a couple years ago at the Alamo Bowl. Perhaps Carr would be interested in rebuilding Notre Dame.

(I’m not Bill Simmons, and I’m not bitter.)

Q. Say that you are Kirk Herbstreit and that you read this blog, is there one piece of game preparation that you can use for this week’s OSU-Michigan game at Noon (ET) on Saturday on ABC?

A. Please recognize RB Mike Hart. The Michigan star has played his career with incredible class and heart. I have no idea if his game or health will translate into being a star on Sunday, but his failure to ever fumble the football along with his desire will make him a long-term star as a coach on the college level at some part. He comes across as a leader and after the start of this season, the Wolverines certainly need need it.

Here is my second shot at projecting the bowls. The Pac-10 will probably not have enough teams to fill all of their slots as well as the MAC. As more games are played the bowl picture should get a little clearer.

One note, these projections are based on the standings now and how I think they will play out throughout the rest of the season. They are not solely based on the standings right now. I also tried to no pick teams with only 5 wins, but if I thought they had a good chance of getting to 6, I included them.

Kansas fans like to use intimidation on opposing teams

The Kansas Jayhawks got past their toughest test of the year so far beating the Oklahoma State Cowboys. I admit I was a little skeptical about Kansas, mostly since I have not seen them play. They scored over 70 points against Nebraska and last week they put up 43 against the Cowboys. I firmly believe that if Kansas runs the table, they should play in the BCS title game. There is no reason why an undefeated team from the Big 12 should not play for the title, if that does happen, time to call the cops because the Jayhawks will have been robbed. Kansas Football breaks down the Big 12 and talks about the past weekend in Big 12 football.

For Hawaii to go BCS Bowling, Colt must have a clear head

Hawaii is the other undefeated in the division formerly known as Division 1-A. The problem for the Warriors right now is that their quarterback Colt Brennan suffered a concussion and is questionable for the upcoming week(s). A Hawaii football blog is reporting that Brennan felt “almost 100%” at today’s practice. I’m not sure if this is a media ploy, but the Warriors will need a 100% healthy Brennan if they want to go to a BCS Bowl game.

The Buckeye’s sloppy play even has Dr Addison scratching her head

If you are a Big Ten fan you know this is the week to end all weeks. Yes it is the last week of play for the Big Ten but more importantly it is Ohio State vs Michigan week. The game got a little less important in the eyes of the nation after both teams lost last Saturday, but to these two schools, this game is as important as ever. The Men of Scarlet and Gray are already brushing off last week’s loss to Illinois and trying to get everyone prepared for Michigan.

Carr is looking to beat Buckeyes in his last game at the Big House

Michigan on the other hand has an added reason to win the game against the Buckeyes. It is being reported that Lloyd Carr is going to announce his retirement after the Ohio State game. There was a lot of speculation at the beginning of the season that this would be Carr’s last season, and early season losses to ASU and Oregon added more fuel to the fire. Carr has reportedly told the team, so I am sure they want to send him out a winner in his last game at the Big House.

Plenty of good grades for the Huskers against Kansas State

I like to pick on Nebraska, but I must commend them for putting a 70 spot on Kansas State last weekend, only one week after Kansas put over 70 points on the Huskers. Maybe the team hasn’t quit on coach Callahan like many think. Husker Mike gives his report card for Nebraska for last week’s game over at Corn Nation.

Speaking of coaches on the hot seat, the grass roots campaign to fire Karl Dorrell is picking up steam. There is talk about taking ads out in the local paper and signs were even made and shown at College Game Day last week. If I were Dorrell I would want out of UCLA.

Finally, my Top 5 for this week:
