Week three was one of the more disappointing performances, as a whole, for the Big East in several seasons. West Virginia opened the slate on Thursday night, with an impressive road-win at Maryland. Cincinnati and Rutgers also continued to play well, easily defeating inferior opponents. UConn also continues to be undefeated, but they look unimpressive, at best, against Temple. Unfortunately, Pittsburgh, Louisville, and Syracuse each lost to BCS conference teams. Syracuse was expected to lose and obliged. Pitt and Michigan State was largely considered a toss-up and both teams showed off horrendous quarterback play and, overall, lackluster offenses–so, while the game was close, neither team looked good and Pitt took the loss. Finally, Louisville and Kentucky went toe-to-toe for four exciting, offense-packed quarters, with the favored Cardinals suffering the loss due to a horrendous lapse in the defensive backfield. Right now, West Virginia still looks like a national title contender, while USF, Cincy, and Rutgers remain undefeated, but have some questionmarks. The rest of the field (aside from Syracuse, who is doomed) has a number of question marks and a lot to prove down the stretch.
This week is pretty quiet, out of conference-wise, and we have the first two conference matchups as well:
North Carolina at South Florida (Sat. 12:00 PM EST - ESPN) — USF was fortunate to get a week off after their big victory over Auburn two weeks ago. They will, almost certainly, be recovered and not suffer a hangover against the Tarheels. This is a good opportunity to pick up another victory over a BCS conference team and an absolute must-win for the Bulls. Jim Leavitt presumably used the off-week to help tune-up the Bulls’ inconsistent offense, so hopefully the results will show. USF 28, UNC 13
Syracuse at Louisville (Sat. 12:00 PM EST - ESPN Gameplan) — Syracuse is abyssmal. It will be a struggle for them to win more than one-game this season (and that is only because they have Buffalo on the schedule) and the most interesting thing to watch down the stretch may be whether or not Coach Robinson makes it through the season without being fired. Louisville is nearly impossible to defeat at home and will be looking to take out their frustrations on the Orange this week. Louisville 57, Syracuse 24
East Carolina at West Virginia (12:00 PM EST - ESPN 2) — East Carolina has played West Virginia tough over the past two seasons, nearly knocking them off at home in 2005. The Pirates play a similar offense to the Mountaineers, so their defense seems a little more accustomed to the spread and play well against it. Still, West Virginia’s offense has been impressive during the first three games and it has still not hit its stride, while the defense is showing signs of improvement, particularly on the defensive line. I think WVU comes out firing this week. West Virginia 46, East Carolina 17
Connecticut at Pittsburgh (7:00 PM EST - ESPNU) — This is a game that may not be very impressive to watch, but it is very important to both of the teams’ bowl prospects. Pittsburgh needs a quarterback to step up soon or LeSean McCoy is going to see 9 or 10 in the box–and Pitt’s line is not strong enough to adjust to that. Pitt fans seem enamored by the “Wildcat” offense they saw last week, but its novelty will quickly wear off if a quarterback does not emerge this week. If Uconn can manage to win this game, they could be 6-0 (they host Akron, have an off-week, and play at UVA in the next three weeks) when they host Louisville on October 19th. I suspect it will be a low-scoring with a lot of turnovers. Pittsburgh 24, UConn 20
Marshall at Cincinnati (7:30 PM EST - ESPN Gameplan) — Marshall lost to (formerly named) D1-AA New Hampshire last week. Cincy seems to be on a roll and on the cusp of cracking into the rankings. The defense has been creating turnovers left and right and the offense has been taking advantage. Look for the Bearcats to roll. Cincinnati 34, Marshall 10
Last Week Record (6-1), Overall Record (21-2)
Not many huge impact games this week, but we do have six games that on paper look like they are good games.
South Carolina (0%) at LSU (100%)
- Ball Coach already got his upset for the season. – Adam Nettina, Pitch Right
- If this were a bar fight I would take the Gamecocks. LSU will run circles around Spurrier’s team. - Brian Sakowski, In the Bleachers
-If anyone beats them this year its Spurrier but I will be conservative. – Tony, Sportsbone TV
- South Carolina has played well, but I do not trust Blake Mitchell against a defense like he will see this week. - Charlie Swager, In The Bleachers
- This has the potential to be an ugly game, given the defenses these teams have. There’s absolutely no way I see Spurrier pulling out a win. Chris Mason, In The Bleachers
-If this was a home game for them, I think the Gamecocks might have an outside shot at the upset. But since this is at Death Valley, forget about it. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe
Penn State (62%) at Michigan (38%)
-The misery continues at the Big House for the Wolverines. - Greg Gowins, Average Joe
- PSU hasn’t beaten a team that’s won a game. Michigan hasn’t either. - Jon Johnston, Corn Nation
- Penn State will sell out against the run and make the freshman Mallet bet them. We will also see the Lions’ offense open up a little. Kickoff return AJ Wallace will take on to the Big House and PSU will win. -Brian, In the Bleachers
- Is this a trap game for Penn State? Right now, Henne looks like he’ll miss another game, and Mallett injected some fun into Michigan last week (albeit against Notre Dame). It will be interesting to see how he handles a pass rush, but having Mike Hart in the backfield doesn’t hurt. Look for Linebacker U to stack the line and make Mallet make quick reads. I see this coming down to a late field goal, with Michigan pulling the upset. – Chris, In The Bleachers
- Oh I think I smell and upset and a song!. – John, Mountainlair
- I feel like Penn State is legitimately one of the top eight teams in the nation, but this is such a dangerous game for them. I would not bet a dime on this game, but I’ll take Penn State’s defense over an inexperienced quarterback. – Charlie, In The Bleachers
Georgia (21%) at Alabama (69%)
- Hey, have you heard that Alabama has a new coach? – Charlie, In The Bleachers
- Saban has hooked the Tide up to the juvenation machine. – Chris, In The Bleachers.
- Saban keeps the home crowd happy. Greg, Average Joe
Washington (62%) at UCLA (38%)
- Sandwich game for Washington or I might have called for upset. – Tony, Sportsbone TV
- Another loss could cause Dorrell to be chased out of town. Look for him to be gone by the end of the year. – Chris, In The Bleachers
- UCLA is a shell shocked team. Tyrone will have the Huskies ready to pounce.- Greg Gowins, Average Joe.
- Query up the swan song for Dorrell. -Brian, In the Bleachers
- Both these teams got dressed-down last week. UCLA had their season crushed and I think they will have a tough time getting over it (I know their fans are!). I think Washington knows that they do not need to be perfect to have a successful season and that they will take care of business on the road. –Charlie, In The Bleachers
- Washington if they bother to look at the Utah tape. – John, Mountainlair
Kentucky (23%) at Arkansas (77%)
- Wow, two states I totally feel comfortable ragging on. – John, Mountainlair
-I wish I had bought stock in Andre Woodson prior to the Louisville game. His presence and touch really impressed me and I can definitely see him becoming a solid NFL starter. Arkansas is a mess. - Charlie, In The Bleachers.
- Kentucky is a good team, but I cannot see them winning two tough games in consecutive weeks. Brian, In The Bleachers
- Arkansas has a much better defense than Louisville. Greg, Average Joe
Iowa (17%) at Wisconsin (83%)
- Wisconsin by 18. Nevermind their struggle against The Cit, but Iowa lost to Iowa State. A win here and Wisconsin could right their ship and ride to the top of the Big Ten. - Chris, In The Bleachers
- Wisconsin comes to life and drills Iowa. – John, Mountainlair
- Kirk Ferentz gets everyone on the same page this week. – Tony, Sportsbone TV
- Jake Christianson suddenly seems like the kind of quarterback which could hold back an otherwise explosive offense. – Adam, Pitch Right
- I don’t trust Wisconsin or Iowa. – Charlie, In The Bleachers
- Wisconsin looks to be the class of the Big 10 this season. – Greg, Average Joe
Bruce Feldman - LSU, Penn State, Alabama, Washington, Arkansas
Brian Sakowski - LSU, Penn State, Alabama, Washington, Arkansas, Wisconsin
Charlie Swager - LSU, Penn State, Alabama, Washington, Kentucky, Iowa
Chris Mason - LSU, Michigan, Alabama, Washington, Arkansas, Wisconsin
John Radcliff - LSU, Michigan, Alabama, Washington, Kentucky, Wisconsin
Jon Johnston - LSU, Michigan, Alabama, Washington, Arkansas, Wisconsin
Adam Nettina - LSU, Penn State, Alabama, UCLA, Kentucky, Wisconsin
Mike Rizzo - LSU, Michigan, Georgia, UCLA, Arkansas, Wisconsin
Jim Gindin - LSU, Michigan, Alabama, UCLA, Arkansas, Wisconsin
Tony Delbusso - LSU, Penn State, Georgia, UCLA, Arkansas, Iowa
Cyril Tircuit - LSU, Penn State, Georgia, Washington, Arkansas, Wisconsin
Greg Gowins - LSU, Penn State, Alabama, Washington, Arkansas, Wisconsin
Lorena The Dodgerchick - LSU, Penn State, Georgia, UCLA, Arkansas, Wisconsin

It is week four in the Big Ten and that means conference play starts. Everyone but Michigan State plays a conference game.
Michigan State at Notre Dame - In 3 games this season the Irish have yet to score an offensive touchdown and they are averaging being sacked more times a game than offensive rushing yards. The Spartans held on for dear life to beat Pittsburgh last week. Javon Ringer should be given the ball 25+ times this game if the Spartans want to win. One of these weeks you have to believe that the Irish will snap out of this funk, they get better this week but not enough to win. Michigan State 20-9
Northwestern at Ohio State - The Wildcats ended a long streak last week, not in a good way. The Duke Bluedevils snapped their 22 game losing streak by beating Northwestern. Ohio State on the other hand went to Washington and came out with an impressive defense. The Buckeyes are going to be a scary team as the season progresses. Offensively they are beginning to gel and on the defensive side of the ball they have LB James Laurinaitis who had 2 INTs and a sack last week anchoring the defense. This should be an easy week for the Buckeyes. Ohio State 31-7
Purdue at Minnesota - The Gophers cannot seem to put an entire game together. Last week they lost to Florida International and once again their defense struggled. Purdue and their high powered offense is going to have a field day against the Gophers secondary. In 3 games Curtis Painter has 13 touchdowns and 952 yards passing. He should have another big day this saturday, and the only way the Gophers can even remotely stay in this game is if Pinnix can keep the clock moving and the Boilermakers’ offense off the field. Purdue 50-17
Iowa at Wisconsin - This will be the first test for the Badgers when the Hawkeyes come to town. Iowa has won the last four meetings between the schools, but the Badgers have won 9 straight at home. Many experts are still skeptical on the Badgers as they did not look impressive at all against UNLV and The Citadel. Iowa is coming off a bad loss against state rival Iowa State in a game where the offense struggled. The Hawkeyes have two good running backs, but right now it seems as if QB Jake Christensen is the one holding them back. This will be an old fashioned hit you in the mouth slug fest. PJ Hill and the Badgers win by a hair. Wisconsin 17-13
Illinois at Indiana - This is a game between two teams that are working their way up the Big Ten ladder. It will also pitt two of the most exciting quarterbacks in the league against each other in Indiana’s Kellen Lewis and Illinois’ Juice Williams. Right now Lewis is the one having the better season but for the Illini they are using their RB Rashard Mendenhall to control the clock. The Illini have been tested a bit more with a win against Syracuse and a close loss to Missouri. I think this is going to be a really exciting game to watch and I am going to stick with Illinois on this one since I think they have more athletes on the defensive side of the ball. Illinois 24-20
Penn State at Michigan - The Nittany Lions are hoping to stop an eight game winning streak that Michigan has over them. I just learned last night that Chad Henne will not start for Michigan, so for the second week in a row freshman Ryan Mallet will start at quarterback. With Mallet starting I think the Lions will but 8 or 9 in the box to stop Mike Hart and put a lot of pressure on the young QB when he does pass. This game will come down to the play of one man, Anthony Morelli. Morelli has all the physical tools but outside a game or two last year, he has not done it against a quality opponent. I think the Nittany Lions open up the offense to take advantage of the weak Wolverine secondary. This one will down to the last seconds, and in my opinon, the streak ends Saturday. Penn State 21-13
Last Week - 8-3 (.727) Overall - 27-6 (.818)

In my weekly pot shot at Notre Dame I call this one What The Hell Are You Thinking??
Adidas is giving out 75,000 white towels on Saturday for Charlie Weis’ charity, Hannah & Friends, and the official Notre Dame Web site, UND.com.
The towels, given out on a first-come, first-serve basis, will read “Tradition Never Graduates — Notre Dame Football.”
On the surface it seems like a good idea to keep the spirt going for the Domers, even with a 0-3 start. But when you look at it deeper, you have to realized that the Irish play Michigan State this week. So putting the two and two together, you will have 75,000 fans dressed in their lucky green Notre Dame shirts, waving white towels. This year when the Spartans win and they plant the flag against at the 50 yard line, it’ll be just like at home.
Moving a little to the East there is another big game in Ann Arbor. For Michigan fans it is just another game, but for Penn State fans this is the game they circle each year on the calender. The Nittany Lions have not beaten the Wolverines since 1996 and if you recall in 2005 the Wolverines came into the game at 3-3 and the Lions were undefeated, and Michigan ended the Lions’ National Title hopes. Run Up the Score and MGoBlog have a nice discussion on the keys to the game and what to expect from each team.
Moving from the Old Man of the Northeast to the Old Man of the South, Seminole fans still cannot be happy with the way their team is playing and one main reason is the play of the quarterbacks. In 2005, Drew Weatherford looked like a promising redshirt freshman that would be contending for a Heisman Trophy before his time was up, but as of now he is barely holding onto his job. Tomahawk Nation breaks down the quarterbacks and is asking you to vote on who should be the starting QB.
I was reading the report cards at Saturday Soundoffs and I must say I disagreed with quite a few of his grades (ahem Penn State), but I totally agree with his picks for In hyped and over-hyped contenders. Wisconsin and Texas both have struggled, more than once, to opponents that had no business being in the game. As I stated earlier in the week, my top 5 teams in the nation are USC, LSU, Oklahoma, Florida, and West Virginia. All 5 of them have shown me signs that they will be in the race for the BCS title game till the end of the season.
There have been Jon Johnston and Joel from Rocky Top sightings. Thank God, I was beginning to worry about them after their teams lost to USC and Florida last weekend. Don’t worry guys, your teams won’t be the last ones to get demolished by USC or Florida this year.

Yes, it’s still only September, but do you realize that by the time the first weekend of December rolls around, we could have four or five undefeated teams and a one-loss SEC team that could claim legitimate berths into the National Championship game in New Orleans?
Picture it if you will, the screaming, gnashing of teeth, and destroyed keyboards clamoring for a gazillion team playoff to settle this..this…wonderful fiasco. We’ll go into why it’s wonderful a bit later, but first, let us review the six BCS conferences by strength merely on my own accord.
1. PAC-10 Any conference that can boast USC and Cal as legit title threats has to be doing something right, but add Oregon and UCLA, despite the Utah thrashing, and you have four teams with real conference hopes that will be battle tested for the BCS. Only one team has a chance to run the table, but the system will have an extremely hard time not going with USC or Cal for New Orleans if they run the table.
My Pick- USC, Cal
2. SEC- Normally, the Southeastern Conference would be setting the agenda for how the top ten shapes up, and as long as Florida and LSU dominate, that will still be the case. However, there are some holes that have developed, particularly in the SEC West that spell trouble. Auburn is having an off year. While Alabama and Arkansas are still quite good, one would figure that one, if not both, would be two loss teams. Can South Carolina fill the Tennessee role and seriously threaten the Gators in the East. I’m not quite sold on LSU quite yet, but getting through unscathed would be a major accomplishment.
My Pick- Florida, LSU
3. Big 10- The problems in Ann Arbor brings the strength of the conference down a notch or two. Ohio State and Penn State are shaping up to be BCS title game threats while Wisconsin is just behind them. Even with the horrific start, Michigan can still find their way to Pasadena with running the Big Ten table. The team that knocks off the Wolverines and the other Big 10 front-runner goes all the way. The big four all play each other this year. The team that wins all three gets the conference. The longer Penn State goes undefeated, the pressure will build to get them into one last championship game for Joepa. If they beat Ohio State, they win the Big 10.
My Pick- PSU
4. Big 12- Conference wise, this is Oklahoma’s to lose. If they beat Texas down in Dallas, they only need to stop Oklahoma State and whomever they get in the Big 12 Championship, Nebraska?, to go to New Orleans. Strong on both sides of the ball, the swager, not Charlie, is back in Norman. Texas has had too many non-conference close calls to not trip up at least once when conference play. Nebraska is still a year or two away from competing for the whole championship, they are getting there and in the weaker North, they have a realistic shot at the Fiesta Bowl.
My Pick- Oklahoma*
5. Big East- You could nearly flip-flop this conference with the Big 12, but Louisville’s loss to Kentucky changes the equation a bit. The conference is stronger, by far, than two seasons ago, South Florida and Cincinnati will make West Virginia, Rutgers, and Louisville sweat. On the other hand, with the talent at WVU and the chance of going undefeated, their berth in New Orleans is certain if, and that’s a mighty big if, they beat the Scarlet Knights in Jersey and the Cardinals at home in back to back weeks. (EDIT-The sentence read wrong.) They are the east coast version of USC, very underrated and very good.
My Pick- WVU*
6. ACC- They blew up the best conference in college basketball for this?
Whomever wins the Boston College-Virginia Tech game in Blacksburg will be the favorite to win it again in Jacksonville. Yawn.
My Pick- VT
*= BCS Title Game Pick
So, you possibly have Penn State/Ohio State, USC/Cal, Oklahoma, and West Virginia all going undefeated with LSU/Florida at one loss. What will we do?
Enjoy it. That’s what we will do. The knuckleheads who wish to institute a multi-team/week playoff forget that the regular season in college football is the most meaningful regular season in any level of sports, period. Most years, you have at most two undefeated teams, and if you look with your head and not your heart, a one loss team will jump out at you over some other one loss teams.
My Solution- A plus one game. You play the bowl games as you always have and then take the best two teams from New Years and play them the week between the NFL Conference Champions and the Super Bowl, on the site of the Super Bowl, with this caveat, not at-large team that lost their conference title can play for the title, and only conference winners ranked in the BCS top ten get a major invite.
If that means no automatic bid for a conference, oh well. I’m sure that most casual fans would rather see a third SEC team that finished at 11-1 than a crappy ACC winner at 7-5. And also, no automatic bid for Notre Dame for winning nine games. It’s the 21st century, if the BCS means that much to the Irish, join a conference and earn your way in. Being second banana in the Big 10 or Big East is no slouch, and you would get an at large berth.
The most competitive eight teams in the country would be playing the biggest games of the year, and will have won a game on a neutral site to earn the big berth. While shrinking the field from ten to eight may look less inclusive, matching eight teams based on being competitive gives the Boise State’s of the world the same chance, and with a plus one game, you just never know.
